Lot Title:
1786 VF-25.
Description:
This colonial-era copper was minted at the famed Rahway Mint from dies created by the also famous James Atlee. This is the same Atlee that made many of the dies that were used to strike counterfeit British half pence, which was done at great personal risk because counterfeiting was a crime punishable by death in colonial America. This piece is the "right" color brown and has no impairments. A small cud identifies the die and serves to show the difficulty in creating high quality steel products in the late 18th century. This is a head right, outline shield as far as the Redbook is concerned.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
