Lot Title:
1882 $50.00. Vicksburg, MS Charter# 3258 Brown Back.
Description:
The First National Bank of Vicksburg, Mississippi. A note of tremendous importance and one that is unique in the collector community. It is a new discover and the only $50 Brown Back type known for the entire State of Mississippi, and it is one of just two known Large Size $50 notes on the state. No $100 examples are reported to exist. The condition of the body of the paper is mostly Fine, but a small piece is missing in the center, and there is a problem around the middle of the bottom margin that downgrades it to an About Good. But for a rarity such is this, the condition is more than acceptable. I for one am glad the first, and likely only example of this type on the State is from a town of such historical notability as Vicksburg, the location of the important battle in which the Union defeated the Confederacy and gained control of the entire Mississippi River. Vicksburg fell to the Union in that battle on the fourth of July, and for the next 81 years the city didn't recognize the Independence Day Holiday. From time to time every collector has a gut check moment. A decision needs to made whether or not to step up to the plate and grab that trophy piece. For some collectors, that moment is right now. Who has what it takes to pull the trigger?
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
