Lot Title:

1849-O NGC AU-58.
|
Description:
|
Mintage: 23,900. 4 graded AU-58, 2 higher at NGC. 1849-O represents a legitimate condition rarity within the series, as the present AU-58 grade has only ever been exceeded by two other coins, according to NGC. UNC specimens are extremely rare, and the date joins other New Orleans issues that have virtually no known mint-state representatives (take a look at the 1852-O and 1855-O, for example). As seems to usually be the case for these contemporary issues, minor semi-prooflike reflectivity can be deduced from observing the character of the protected portions of the fields in spite of a considerable level of friction seen throughout. An especially large number of micro-abrasions almost gives the fields superficial matte texture, though the protected areas remain reflective. This is the only indication of wear, since the highpoint details remain basically new. A surprisingly unimportant scratch on the left side of the eagle's shield is cause for little to no concern, as it will not even be noticed by most bidders. Canary-gold overall, and certainly one of the rarest gold coins in today's auction. (PCGS# 008602)

Veins of darker patina visit this mustard-gold New Orleans gold coin, and the eagle's wings are strongly tinted with this same color, providing insight into the grungy, dirty circumstances sometimes... |
