Lot Title:
1783 Washington UNITY cent (Baker-1) XF.
Description:
Experience shows that basically all planchets used to strike the so-called "unity cent" had "roller marks" applied prior to striking. The consignor purchased this as an example that does not shows the familiar parallel striations, but close inspection shows that indeed, there are light lines still visible just above WASHINGTON, although for sure, the anomaly is much less apparent on this example than it is for most. Not to be confused with "damage", their presence has no role in grade. In that regard, this is certainly a nicer-than-average example that likely grades extremely-fine, as the gorgeous olive-brown surfaces actually exhibit attractive original frost and even hints of faint luster lurking between peripheral lettering. A brief black line on the portrait may be nothing more than inadvertent magic-marker and forms the only distraction. (PCGS# 000689)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
