1843 Slave Badge, ex-Paul West Collection, plus Confederate $5 and $10 notes.
Description:
Ex-Stacks January 2006; Paul West Collection; lot 1039. Borrowing liberally from the Stack's description, the badge is oriented in diamond format with a hole at top for suspension, and bowed out slightly "believed to add additional strength to the badge when worn." Text embossed on the badge indicates CHARLESTON / 1843 / PORTER / 589, the wording still quite legible despite surface corrosion and roughness overall. Indeed, condition of the badge suggests it may have been found buried in the ground. Sequence of the wording isn't necessarily consistent from badge to badge, as some invert the order of the date and the (presumed) serial number. They were issued and used in Charleston and Charleston Neck, S.C. for the purpose of identifying slaves that were permitted to hire out their services for payment, which was then to be shared with the slave's owner. In addition, the city received an annual fee of $2 per tag. Every date from 1800 through 1864 is known to exist, corresponding to the most prominent era of the institution within the United State. As an historical footnote, approximately 15,000 slaves resided in Charleston alone in 1843, with perhaps 15% hired out at any given time. Included with the badge are the Stack's auction tag, as well as a pair of Confederate paper money notes, a $5 note (Fine) and a $10 note (VF).
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
