Lot Title:
Judd-239: 1859 half-dollar, NGC PF-61.
Description:
Hairlines twist and turn through the fields, but of course they do not diminish the scarcity of this almost-rare and popular pattern. The portrait has a distinctive "French" decor about it, and indeed inspires the "French head" appellation given this and several other half-dollar patterns of the era. Caramel-grey patina layers the surface and helps attenuate the effects of cleaning during bygone eras, yet the fields still retain nice reflectivity. (PCGS# 011972)
