Lot Title:

Judd-60: 1836 Gobrecht dollar, alignment I, PF-30 details/holed.
|
Description:
|
Mile High Collection. Judd-60, R.1. The Gobrecht die-marriage most often encountered shows normal coin alignment with Liberty's head opposite "O" in ONE, and despite the relative infrequency with which examples appear on the market, these "original" strikings have been given a "common" rating by most sources. Sharpness reaches into the higher range of VF for this pewter-bright example, with ample details remaining in the eagle's feathers while modest wear can be detected on his breast and tail. Liberty retains a considerable portion of her boldest details and LIBERTY can be seen fully intact on the shield. The detriment which cannot be mistaken is a small and fairly neat hole just above Liberty's head. Although punched through, as such a contemporary alteration was wont to be (inexpensive drilling equipment was not necessarily widely available in the mid-19th century), the edges of the hole were rolled back so as to afford bracing against an enclosed string or other device for suspension. The coin has also been cleaned, as one would expect of a cosmetic decoration, but to turn a phrase, the detriment of cleaning pales against the offense of the presence of the hole.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
