1817 New Spain (Texas) 1/2-real ("jola"). 1817 New Spain (Texas) 1/2-real ("jola").
Lot Title: 1817 New Spain (Texas) 1/2-real ("jola").
Description: Avant Garde Collection. The Texas jola (1/2-reales) can almost be considered "colonial pieces", as they circulated in an area that later became part of the United States. Indeed, these are the only Spanish coins known to have been physically minted in any area that would later become part of the fifty states. The Republic of Texas became an independent nation as a result of the Revolution of 1835, and the later Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848 would result in the annexation of Texas to the United States on December 29, 1845. An article in The Numismatist suggests that a singular star in the fields on the reverse of some jola represents the first appearance of the Lone Star symbol. Per the same article, the jola was struck by Manuel Barrera in San Antonio, with mintage limited to 8000 pieces, though there is no record of how many were actually struck. Sources states that six examples dated 1817 are known, and all are in such a low state of preservation that it can be difficult to decipher their details. The date side for this 1817 shows part of R. GARZA arcing over the 1/2 denomination, below which appears the date. No recognizable details or regular texture can truly be discerned from the other side. (PCGS# 000559)
