Lot Title:
Judd-346: 1863 Seated Dollar "Transitional" Pattern, copper, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. The "no motto" Seated Liberty reverse was used on regular issue silver dollars through 1866, while the "with motto" reverse commenced usage that same year, and of course, both type used the same obverse format. This example combines a date (1863) that falls within the "no motto" era with a reverse that shows "IN GOD WE TRUST" on a ribbon above the eagle, thus constituting a "transitional" mule pairing, struck in copper. Obviously then, it would have to have been produced at some date later than 1863, when the new reverse die became available. NGC PF-64 BN, Rarity 7. (PCGS# 070508)
