Judd-326b: 1863 10-Cents Pattern, copper, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Judd-326a references a version struck in billon, with this Judd-326b struck in copper. As such, it is more elusive than even its very rare cousin as a subtype for this 1863 pattern, with virtually no appearances at a major sale over the last ten years. Apparently, the mint envisioned use of these coins as a durable alternative to replace the special Postage Currency bills then in use, and the shield side states "EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES" as affirmation of that purpose. Fortunately, with reGarde to preserving this particularly rare metallic composition, this example has been preserved exceptionally well and offers pleasing, original quality. NGC PF-65 RB, Rarity 8.
