Description:

New World Estate. Judd-7, R.4 (the reeded edge can be discerned despite the conforming slab insert and confers attribution). Many pattern issues in the Judd book are collected right along with their respective series, such as the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, and the 1856 Flying Eagle cent. In like fashion though to a lesser degree, the 1792 half-disme is avidly collected by enthusiasts of the half-dime collection as the "first of the series". Current Judd references acknowledge that many exhibit extensive wear and/or dents, and indeed the present example shows a bend in the obverse left field, as well as a collection of small, scattered abrasions that defy simple dismissal as "circulation marks". Of course, the most obvious and prominent distraction is a small hole at 12:00 of the obverse, and although punched through the planchet (rather than drilled), the piercing edges were pressed down with care such that the offense is as tidy as a contemporary hole can be. Undoubtedly, the diminutive coin served as a cosmetic item, and the surfaces exhibit some glossy texture due to past cleanings. However, some slate-grey patina has recovered in the protected areas which at least helps the eye-appeal to a small degree. (PCGS# 011020)
