Lot Title:
1856-D Uncirculated details/cleaned.
Description:
Marshmallow Collection. Although the highest relief areas definitely lack sharpness (curls above the ear, the eagle's neck), "NC details" still seems like an appropriate assessment as nearly ever high grade 1856-D bears these same striking deficiencies. Unfortunately, this piece projects an unusual citrus-bronze aspect and excessively smooth texture that suggests it has been burnished and recolored. Closer inspection finds some greyish corruption scattered about the surface that might indicate old corrosion, which would help explain smoothing of the entire surface. (PCGS# 008268)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Very good, original surface quality is augmented with the subtle effects of minimal cartwheel luster. Predominantly apricot-gold in color, though most devices are faintly outlined with tobacco-brown... |
