Lot Title:
1854-S ICG AU-55.
Description:
Very bright, in part due to the extensive luster required of an AU-55 grade, but the lemon-yellow color might also speak to a minor old dip with no detrimental effects. Scattered reed marks and trivial ticks pepper the surface yet have less effect than expected due to the low-contrast color scheme. The 1854-S 10-dollar has an approachable value up to about the AU-50 level, then escalates rapidly in cost beyond that, but at least it can be reasonably collected unlike the 1854-S half-eagle and quarter-eagle, which are both exceedingly rare. (PCGS# 008615)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1854-S in the gold eagle series is not strictly rare, as a mintage of almost 124-thousand pieces makes readily apparent, but the date is significant as the commencement of gold coinage in San... |
