1859 PCGS PF-64CAM.
Description:
4 graded PF-64 CAM, 1 higher at PCGS. That statement alone reveals much about the near-extreme rarity of the 1859 gold dollar, with cameo contrast and in very high proof grade. Completely unlike the gold dollars struck during the 1880s, examples of this era saw very low emissions, with eighty reportedly struck against a poor survival rate. Chances are that only about twenty(!) proof examples still survive in any grade. Expansive reflectivity beckons from the fields and provide wide-open contrast with the central motifs. At first glance, one might even ponder the possibilities of a DCAM upgrade, although the obverse fields are going to be to diffusive to permit the mirroring level required. Marvelous sharpness over all devices demonstrates the capability of the mint in creating amazing jewels, the lack of demand apparently keeping production low. Some hairlines feather through the fields and delineate the PF-64 numeric grade level. (PCGS# 087609)

1859 and 1862 gold dollars AU-58
The 1859 dollar grades AU-58 despite a few obverse hairlines, and possesses lemon-yellow color. It's companion, an 1862, similarly grades AU-58 with a few hairlines, but is a little duskier in color.... |
