Lot Title:
1858-S NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
Description:
Mike Wrinkle Collection, Mintage: 10,000. Numerous survivors of this low-production date have come down to us today with major problems, and quite frankly, a meaningless cleaning presents little distraction for the collector who needs a reasonably attractive example. Indeed, the "cleaning" ascribed this example by NGC amounts to only minor, whispery hairlines crossing here and there through the fields, yet the coin manages to retain some level of vintage luster. In fact, the details actually seem very close to the MS-60 level, with only extremely faint wear responsible for the "AU details" level. A tough one for sure, and a date that is probably underrated within the gold dollar series. (PCGS# 007550)
