(About The Images)
1893 NGC PF-64 (no line) CAC. 1893 NGC PF-64 (no line) CAC.
Lot Title: 1893 NGC PF-64 (no line) CAC.
Description: NGC did not use any sort of "cameo" designation during the era this coin was certified. The slab itself is a famous and aggressively popular edition that bears the embossed NGC logo on the back. Years after coins in these holders were encapsulated, a perceived downward shift in grading standards ("gradeflation") led to the belief that many were undergraded by later standards. Thus, thousands were subsequently cracked out for re-submission.

Of course, as coin collectors, it is the coin itself that matters, and we are pleased to report that the PF-64 grade (no designation) given this particular proof Barber quarter certainly seems conservative. Molten gold toning precipitates through the fields, embellished by a lengthy splash of aqua-indigo atop the obverse; common conjecture is that the label itself concentrated chemical fumes into the confines of such slabs and imparted (often) very beautiful toning. In charming contrast with the medium toning and reflective fields, Liberty's portrait is lavishly adorned in bone-white frosty texture, and features on the reverse seem similarly frosted. Some fragile hairlines in the fields will play into technical considerations, but they do not distract at all from the marvelous exhibition. The Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award is not intended to apply only to wonder-gem coins. Perfectly humble yet endlessly attractive proof coins just like this can sometimes be suitable candidates, and this one definitely is. (PCGS# 005679)

Stunning contrast develops immediately from frothy texture on Liberty's portrait, with the only break noticeable in the lowest recesses of the design. The eagle's entire motif shows similar frost...

1893 and 1907-O, both MS-60.
A squiggly scrape on Liberty's cheek accompanies a couple of small contact marks on the neck and suggest a grade of MS-60 for the 1893, but the coin also features exceptional album toning that will...

1893 NGC MS-64.
The original quality of the surfaces is blatantly obvious, doused as they are in classic album tones of teal, cinnamon-gold and lavender-grey. Richness of the patina tends to mute the luster, yet...
