French Connection Estate. The concept that a proof set such as this could exist -- original, intact and kept so incredibly well-preserved -- almost defies belief. But here they are, a group of seven proof Philippines coins dated 1906 that together comprise an almost mind-boggling group which, according to the consignor, was purchased intact directly from the U.S. mint. During this period, Americans William H. Taft (1900-1904), Henry Clay Ide (1905-1906) and James Francis Smith (1906-1909) served as governor of the islands. It was a position that carried some prestige during the start of the 20th century, and of course, the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints struck Philippines proof sets between 1903 and 1908 (except 1907). Only 500 were struck in 1906. For reasons not necessarily all that clear, most sets seem to have become broken and damaged over the years; in a previous auction, we featured an original set for which most of the coins were heavily corroded. Such is not the case here, as every coin was sent to NGC per the consignor's wishes and certified immediately upon first attempt. This set, as we understand it, has not been publicly seen in one-hundred years.

Beginning with the copper pieces, the most amazing characteristic that one cannot help but notice immediately is the rich, deeply original patina that appears utterly intact and practically unfazed on the copper coins. Aside from a delicate halo of even richer bronze-gold on the rims, the coins display virtually consistent patina from edge to edge and side to side. However, the 1/2-centavo (PF-64 RD) may have received a small grade reduction to a bluish stain at lower right on the obverse. The 1-centavo (PF-66 RD) shows superb originality with a single grey carbon spot hidden off to the left of the obverse, and a few additional spots on the reverse. Virtually full nickel-white brilliance emanates from the 5-centavos coin, with clear, pristine fields illuminated by gently rolling luster. All four silver coins possess remarkably consistent graphite-purple patina that cannot be mistaken as anything other than very strictly original color. We list NGC grades for the coins as 10-cent (PF-66), 20-cent (PF-64), 50-cent (PF-66), and 1-peso (PF-66). The 20-cent actually looks just like its companions but shows a shallow scuff in the obverse lower left field. Many of the Philippines silver proofs have toned in ugly mottled patterns over the years, as they often spent decades carelessly wrapped in tissue paper, but though these are rather dark in appearance, the superb lustrous eye-appeal cannot be missed. For the first time in Scotsman's history, the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award has been found applicable for a set of coins, marking this as a truly special offering in today's sale.
