Lot Title:
1901-S PCGS XF-40.
Description:
17 graded XF-40, 31 higher at PCGS. Especially in a PCGS holder, 1901-S in XF-40 is a "hidden key" to the Barber half-dollar series, with a terribly low population (17) for a grade that is extremely popular with collectors. Look at your price guide, then look at auction results to confirm that guides always underestimate the value of the coin in that grade. This is an interesting example that features neutral grey tones overall, draped with peach-gold in the outer fields, and a definite glimmer of cobalt toning scattered against the rims. (PCGS# 006491)

1901-S VF details/lightly cleaned, and a 1909-O XF details/cleaned.
Cleaning is definitely not dramatic for the 1901-S, since the battleship-grey surfaces display hardly more than a few subtle, patchy hairlines. This coin has VF-35 details and a beautiful die crack... |

629 | The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007 | $1,100.00 |
1901-S PCGS XF-40.
Along with the dime, and of course the quarter, the 1901-S is a key date in the series, one of the top half dozen or so. It is difficult to locate examples in better circulated grades as most end up... |
