Lot Title:
(1837-42) C. Bechtler Gold dollar (Kagin-4), 28G, N Reverse. NGC MS-61.
Description:
Alexander Hamilton included the gold dollar denomination in his original plan for national coinage, but Christopher Bechtler struck his gold dollars a full decade before the United States actually began to strike Federal issues. Bechtler's design was certainly simple and efficient, as it indicates the weight (28 grams) though fineness is not listed as on some of his other issues. Nonetheless, Bechtler kept honest accounting for his coins, and they proved to be of proper gold content, allowing them to circulate freely in the South for decades. Calling attention to the scarcity of this variety, NGC shows only 60 certified in all grades, this a mint-state survivor. The coin displays eye-catching original gold color with grapefruit accents gathered toward the rim. Each side also displays a gentle touch of reflectivity, which consequentially emphasizes any tiny contact in the fields. (PCGS# 010055)

(1837-42) BECHTLER (Kagin-4). ANACS XF-40 details/bent.
Fascinating in the way the "N" is reversed for the denomination, and also notable for the use of inverted "V"s for "A"s. Bent per the ANACS disclaimer, but very scarce. |
