Lot Title:

1841-C NGC UNC details/cleaned.
|
Description:
|
Jackson's Branch Mint Gold, mintage: 10,200. Low emissions of gold from the Charlotte mint were standard fare and help keep the series challenging for collectors of today who wish to compile complete sets. Adding to that challenge is a heavy shortage of UNC examples, since these gold coins entered southern commerce and sometimes encountered abuse, leading to many non-certifiable coins today. Although NGC has disclaimed a grade with "UNC/improperly cleaned", it appears that this is actually a very slightly circulated quarter-eagle that does display overly brilliant surfaces, but the cleaning really detracts very little from the overall presentation. In exchange for a considerable discount, the astute bidder will find himself in possession of a coin with robust details (for a Charlotte strike) and enticingly unmarked surfaces. Having escaped meaningful wear, the details include a tiny die-crack extending downward from the eagle's beak, this feature often missing from well-worn coins, and the left (observed) wingtip connects to the rim with another die-crack. The entire rim shows a nice knife-like edge that also will not be found on circulated coins. (PCGS# 007721)

1841-C XF/cleaned.

Mintage of only 10,281 pieces automatically inaugurated the 1841-C as a scarcer issue, and attrition has reduced this number to fewer than 80 surviving pieces, by most estimates. As expected, far... |

1841-C NGC AU-58.

Because fewer than a handful of examples of 1841-C exist in mint state, the AU-58 grade acquires superlative importance for collectors. This is a typically yellow Charlotte coin that features minimal... |
