1849 Closed Wreath. PCGS MS-63.
Description:
Competition between the "closed wreath" and "open wreath" reverse is among the most interesting in the U.S. series. At some grades, one appears scarcer than the other, flip-flopping precedence at other grades. PCGS has assigned a suitable MS-63 to this luminescent example of the "closed wreath" reverse, and at this exact level, experience suggests that the coins are neck-and-neck in terms of scarcity. Laying such comparisons aside, the important point is that many type collectors covet a single coin from this inaugural year, and an attractive example like this should serve nicely. Gorgeous coppertone patina flutters about the streaming luster, and forms an intriguing pattern over the striated, central areas of the reverse. (PCGS# 007503)

Peachy-gold and squeaky clean, this inaugural gold dollar probably received a conservative grade due to slide marks on the portrait. But at arm's length, the appearance is that of a sharp gem. Not... |
