Lot Title:
1849 Closed Wreath. PCGS MS-63.
Description:
At first glance, the lemon-yellow hue is highly reminiscent of that seen on fractional gold, and for that matter, the general countenance is somewhat prooflike -- again as is often seen on California gold coins. Unlike those counterparts, however, this gold dollar manifests very sharp details, including the date on the reverse, a trouble spot in later years. The "closed wreath", as designated by PCGS, is considered the more common subtype for 1849. (PCGS# 007503)

1849 Closed Wreath. PCGS MS-62.
Peachy-gold and squeaky clean, this inaugural gold dollar probably received a conservative grade due to slide marks on the portrait. But at arm's length, the appearance is that of a sharp gem. Not... |
