Lot Title:
1771 Machins Mills 1/2-P (Vlack-2-71A, R.4) XF.
Description:
Traditionally associated with James Atlee halfpence. Whereas some imitation British half-pennies circulating in the colonies were actually relatively well struck, examples of Vlack 2-71A always show poor central details, which was precisely the goal of the illicit production. In order to complete the deception of an already-circulated copper (and therefore a coin that would seem legitimate to a none-too-wary observer), these were produced with the appearance of having already become somewhat worn by using shallow dies and low quality planchets. Nonetheless, the present example displays surprising sharpness in the bust, and it was struck on a fairly decent planchet. Numerous tiny ticks blanket the entire coin but should not be confused with microporosity; the planchets were almost certainly prepared to look like this upon being struck. A pleasing example with excellent honey-brown patina, struck a little off-center to the right, but with the date and all legends balanced on the flan. (PCGS# 000448)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
