Lot Title:
1895 NGC PF-65 CAMEO.
Description:
A complete set of circulation strike Morgan dollars does not require inclusion of a Philadelphia 1895 example, since those were all melted down, leaving only Proof coins in their stead. However, the crowning achievement for any enthusiast may be the acquisition of such a proof coin, and with only 880 struck (and fewer than that surviving), only a limited number of Morgan dollar collectors may compete for examples on the market. Beyond that, the purchase of a GEM proof instantly places one's set into world-class contention. NGC has assigned a grade of PF-65 CAMEO to this heart-stopping coin. That the presentation displays full cameo contrast cannot be argued, as the fields offer exceptional depth of reflectivity, surrounding devices moderately layered in cotton-white frost. Barring "ultra cameo" consideration, the lowest areas of the design relief show localized brilliance, the result of a gradually deteriorating die, but the fine matte texture reaches all the way to the edge of every single design element, including the peripheral lettering. A couple of small carbon spots rest on Liberty's cheek but display as tiny dark points at arm's length. Aside from a couple of brief curved hairlines in front of Liberty's nose, no technical limitations need be mentioned. The GEM quality is entirely there, clothed in gentle vanilla-white patina. Needless to say, all the details are brought up to extreme sharpness. (PCGS# 087330)

This piece is one of just 880 Proof issues struck. No business strikes exist, although a submission in a mint report alludes to 12,000 being produced. Perhaps out of these 880 specimens, only 600 to... |
