Lot Title:
1846-D/D PCGS VF-35.
Description:
Jackson's Branch Mint Gold. One of the best overpunched mintmarks in any U.S. series, the first "D" was implanted well up into the arrow feathers on the reverse, with the corrected placement south by 2/3 a full letter's height. The reverse of this example actually exhibits a nice touch of luster and pleasing definition, while the obverse suffers from prolonged die wear and some softness of detail -- a common situation for these Dahlonega half-eagles. Honey-gold patina crowds the rims and suggests very decent vintage character. (PCGS# 008229)

Variety 16-L (Breen-6565) surely has to rank as one of the most extreme repunched mintmarks in U.S. numismatics. The second "D" was repunched much lower than the first and scarcely overlaps. This is... |
