(About The Images)
1881, 1886-S, and 1898-S, all NGC MS-62. 1881, 1886-S, and 1898-S, all NGC MS-62.
Lot Title: 1881, 1886-S, and 1898-S, all NGC MS-62.
Description: While not rare dates, at least each member of this trio is from the 1800s, thus avoiding the very common early twentieth century issues. Each is graded MS-62 by NGC. 1881 offers a surprisingly nice level of semi-prooflike character, especially on the obverse, the drawback being that tiny ticks and marks on each side are unfairly magnified. 1886-S has somewhat cleaner surfaces, and 1898-S looks about average for the grade. Three coin lot.
Low Estimate: $1,300.00
High Estimate: $1,500.00
Lot Status: Bidding has been closed for this lot.

1141The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$400.00
1881 PCGS MS-61.
Delicate flash in the fields offers a reminder that coins struck earlier off these same dies probably were semi-prooflike. This example does seem a touch better than MS-61 at first blush despite a...
1142The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$650.00
1881 PCGS MS-63.
Mike Wrinkle Collection. Delicate peppermint-blue patina touches the high points of the design elements and adds plenty of original eye-appeal. Just the usual small bagmarks identify the grade.
1097The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$380.00
1881 PCGS MS-61 (green label).
Surfaces are infused with rich, royal-gold tone and appear to be fully original. Some doubling of the design elements is very noticeable on the reverse, particularly at UNITED STATES O, FIVE, and at...
1098The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,075.00
1881 PCGS MS-64.
A great strike, satin-fresh texture and distraction-free surfaces are all wrapped up nicely in MS-64 quality. The obverse rim features the lovely "halo" effect that many astute collectors seek out in...
844The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,400.00
1881, 1886-S, and 1898-S NGC MS-62.
A trio of gold half-eagles in NGC EdgeView holders, graded MS-62. 1881 is just on the cusp of earning a "prooflike" designation, with readily visible cameo contrast that is diminished only by ticks...
845The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$2,200.00
1881, 1895, and 1900, all PCGS MS-63.
PCGS has assigned an MS-63 grade to each gold half-eagle in this trio, and it must be admitted that all are only average for that grade. Dates include 1881, 1895 and 1900, but in each case, the coin...
1059The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$450.00
1881 NGC MS-62.
Extremely subtle iron-gold patina provides a bit of a change from the ordinary, although 1881 is a common date in the series no matter what. Detail quality is only average, as the stars are not fully...
793The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$300.00
1881 NGC MS-60.
Celebrate the moment as a third-party grading service, in this case NGC, makes judicious use of the sadly neglected MS-60 grade. "Select uncirculated" takes into account considerable abrasion of the...

1881 MS-60.
Frosty gold, lustrous and fully uncirculated.

1881, 1895, and 1904. NGC MS-61.
Consecutive decades are represented by this trio of Coronet gold half-eagles, all graded MS-61 by NGC. 1888 is well abraded but is bathed in russet-gold tone, 1895 is a little less abraded but also...
786The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,300.00
1881 NGC MS-64.
Scattered tiny ticks determine the grade. And the beat goes on.
1158The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$2,600.00
1881, 1895 and 1899 NGC MS-63.
A trio of attractive half-eagles, all graded MS-63 by NGC. Dates included 1881, 1895 and 1899, the middle coin being somewhat semi-prooflike. Three coin lot.
920The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$825.00
1881 and 1908 half-eagles, PCGS MS-62
Both of these coins are in older green-label PCGS holders and identically graded MS-62. The 1881 lacks a bit of highpoint detail due to a nonchalant strike, while the 1908 is a little better struck. ...
921The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,100.00
1881 Coronet half-eagle, PCGS MS-63
Unusual, frosty grey-gold color accents the peripheral areas, framing the primary devices in stylish fashion. A premium quality appearance is augmented by strong luster, and impaired only by a small...
1031The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$700.00
1881 NGC MS-63.
This issue is not only strikingly lustrous, but it emanates a golden glow that's encircled on both sides with a delicate olive nuance. Mild surface marks appear mainly in the fields on both sides of...
1046The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$625.00
1881 NGC MS-63.
An iridescent olive hugs the peripheries of this enticing golden orange specimen. For ascription purposes, there's a light sprinkling of surface ticks on this boldly struck date.
1047The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$1,550.00
1881 NGC MS-64.
This glowing specimen emanates an elegant orange-gold aspect from its flashy surfaces. Some marks are disseminated, but none are too prominent on this splendidly struck issue. A piece that may...
459The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$500.00
1881/0 ANACS AU-50.
This coin, holdered as Breen 6714, faces up nicely, and the luster is pleasing for an AU-50. The underdigit is clear. A very appealing coin for the assigned grade, and rare as a variety, this $5 gold...
1098The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$150.00
1881 MS-63.
Luster is dripping off both the obverse and reverse of this well-struck Half Eagle. Its color is smooth and bright, and there are no distractions.
1099The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$650.00
1881 NGC MS-63.
Frosty and way too gorgeous to be in an MS-63 holder in my opinion. Large portions of the surfaces appear void of any marks. This coin would definitely be a bargain anywhere close to MS-63 money.
