Lot Title:
1844-O PCGS Genuine (code 92/AU details/cleaned).
Description:
The low-mintage 1844-O (118,700 struck) has sometimes been the target of cleaning and other processes intended to "add value", and this example displays telltale signs of just such treatment. Surfaces look too pale to pass as original, and a broad swath of the fields displays abraded, lightly hairlined greyish texture, especially on the reverse. Despite attractive definition, little luster remains, relegated mostly to the extreme periphery. Still, some collectors may want to pursue the available AU detail, since a problem-free example at that level can cost thousands of dollars extra. (PCGS# 008591)

The 1844-O eagle is extensively hairlined and dull as a result, while a few hairlines on the 1907 "no motto" are incidental in nature and shouldn't prevent an AU-50 grade. Finally, an 1852 half-eagle... |

Light yellow-gold color emanates from this New Orleans Branch Mint example. The glistening surfaces exhibit much of its remaining lustrous quality. A light sprinkling of ticks, as would be expected... |
