Lot Title:

1965 Roosevelt dime on a 90% silver planchet NGC AU-55.
Description:
NGC properly indicates that this is a "transitional error", which of course, it is. As everyone knows, the mint discontinued use of the 90% dime planchets after the 1964 issues, commencing with clad planchets in 1965. One might assume that a (very) few silver planchets remained stuck in "the hopper" and became dislodged while the new 1965s were being struck. That, or confusion occurred during the striking of coins of both dates; the mint was making both 1964 silver dimes, and 1965 clad dimes simultaneously during the "transition period". A discussion with famed coin-error specialist Fred Weinberg suggests that 10 to 12 examples are known. This one is lightly circulated, reflecting prudent retrieval from commerce by an astute observer of the period. While not nearly as well known as the "1943 bronze cent", the "1965 on a 90% silver planchet" is precisely the same type of mint error situation, and very well worth a look by collectors who covet such rarities.
