Lot Title:
1925-S NGC MS-64.
Description:
Fifty-two coins comprise a complete set of Saint-Gaudens double-eagles (including the high-relief), and in the MS-64 grade, perhaps seven coins exceed the price-tag associated with 1925-S. Indeed, the NGC population report shows 20 in this grade, but only 4 graded higher. These are all statistical indications of a true "key" to the set (and incidentally, even in the circulated grades, 1925-S commands a substantial price premium). The surfaces of this pristine, original example sustain gorgeous, brassy-gold coloration that features an extremely subtle hint of rose in the obverse upper fields, but not a single copper stain can be found anywhere. The obverse is exceptionally well preserved and presents no hairlines or marks, making the coin appear to be undergraded at first glance. That said, the reverse displays evidence of minor hairlines in the upper right quadrant, and that undoubtedly played a small role in the NGC grade. (PCGS# 009182)

The Saint-Gaudens series sometimes seems fraught with enigma, since low-mintage issues might be considered plentiful, while high-mintage issues can prove downright uncommon. 1925-S is an example of... |
