(About The Images)
1925-S PCGS MS-62. 1925-S PCGS MS-62.
Lot Title: 1925-S PCGS MS-62.
Description: The Saint-Gaudens series sometimes seems fraught with enigma, since low-mintage issues might be considered plentiful, while high-mintage issues can prove downright uncommon. 1925-S is an example of the latter situation. Mintage for issue was the fourth highest for the series with 3.8 million struck -- prodigious output for San Francisco, exceeded only by Philadelphia in 1908, 1924 and 1928. Presumably, an unusually high percentage of this output terminated its existence in the melting pot during the great gold recall.

While long known to be a semi-key for the series (even in circulated grades), population statistics at the major grading services tell the true story. At the MS-62 level, NGC has graded 89 with 49 higher (63/100 at PCGS), and unquestionably there has been a significant number of resubmissions over the past two decades. While these population statistics may not immediately appear to indicate a scarce coin, consider that more than 75-THOUSAND P-mint coins have been certified for this same date -- and that is not even the most common issue!

This is an excellent and properly graded example, providing a nice blend of original honey-gold surfaces, and fields and devices that are rather free from major marks or abrasions. There is a moderate reed mark just above Liberty's right (observed) shoulder, and a vertical contact mark in the eagle's wings, yet the torso is not nearly as distressed by abrasions as one might expect from MS-62. All this being said, the strike quality is average, with decent luster augmenting the overall appearance.
