$10 Refunding Certificate. VF.
Description:
Fr# 214. An amazing lot which includes two currency items. First is an 1879 "refunding certificate", a type of interest-bearing banknote issued by the United States Treasury only in the $10 denomination. "This certifies that the sum of Ten Dollars has been deposited with the Treasurer of the United States under Act of February 26th, 1879. Convertible with accrued interest at 4 per cent per annum into 4 per cent bonds of the United States issued under the Acts of July 14, 1870 and January 20, 1871 upon presentation at the office of the Treasurer of the U.S. Washington D.C. in sums of $50. or multiples thereof." Also included is a typewritten letter from the Asst. Cashier (Emil Schulz) of Jefferson City, MO, requesting on behalf of a client a statement of value, and counter-typed by the Asst. Treasurer of the U.S. is such statement indicating a net of $20.97 including interest. An absolutely fascinating and historical item that can be readily enjoyed by any serious currency specialist.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
