Lot Title:

Collection of Washington quarters 1932 through 1998-D, including proofs from 1936 through 1964.
|
Description:
|
This surely must qualify as one of the nicest complete sets of Washington quarters to cross the Scotsman auction block in recent memory, with the collection obviously assembled with adroit skill and precise selection of exceptional examples. Grade ESTIMATES are offered, and everything is included in the commercial strike series from 1932 through 1998-D, plus, amazingly, a complete run of proofs from 1936 through 1964 is also included. Likely for budgetary reasons, the 1932 D & S keys were adeptly selected as very high-end Aus that mesh well with the rest of the collection, which is almost entirely populated by Choice UNC coins at minimum, not to mention a large number of GEMs even on the very difficult first page. 1932-D appears to be AU-55, and 1932-S is AU-58+, or about as close as one can get to UNC. 1936-D is amazingly nice for the date and might grade MS-65, while 1937-S grades MS-64. Sliders in the AU-58/60 range include 1935-D, 1940-D, 1943, 1944-S and 1986-P, but these are easily balanced by superior MS-64/65 examples of 1935-S (ex-PCGS MS-65), 1936, 1936-S (ex-NGC MS-65), 1938-S (ex-NGC MS-66), 1939-D and 1939-S. 1946-S and
1955 are breathtaking. Turning to the proofs, we find that 1936 and 1937 are both probably "choice" or very close, and 1938 appears to have some cameo effect. All the proof are essentially white except for 1955, which has light obverse toning and some claims to a cameo designation. An almost incredibly strong collection that obviously was a labor of love, and one that deserves to find suitable appreciation in a new home.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
