(About The Images)
1787 STATES UNITED 4 CINQ (Newman 12-S, R.5). PCGS VF-35. 1787 STATES UNITED 4 CINQ (Newman 12-S, R.5). PCGS VF-35.
Lot Title: 1787 STATES UNITED 4 CINQ (Newman 12-S, R.5). PCGS VF-35.
Description: Sometimes, third-party grading of colonial coins requires a cynical approach, but PCGS seems to have gotten the VF-35 grade exactly right in this case. 12-S (4 cinquefoils, pointed rays) is considered a rare (R.5) Newman variety, and it is likely that this is a condition-census piece, given the caveat that grading these consistently is very difficult. An example imaged in the Notre Dame reference is an amazing coin if images are to be trusted, but all the others seen by your cataloger aren't as nice as the present certified coin. The first Roman digit "X" in XII is not quite visible, but the entire complement of Roman numerals is otherwise bold, and that barely keeps the coin from extremely-fine sharpness. As always seen for 12-S, the sun's rays are modestly blended close to the center, and details on the extreme left suffer legibility due to a problem with the die, while MIND YOUR BUSINESS is absolutely complete. On the reverse, the rim is completely raised and displays nearly all of the possible segmentation, bearing out near-perfect centering for the entire coin. And lastly, the surfaces are remarkably attractive, featuring ideal medium-brown patina that is just sparsely interrupted by small, inert patches of raised corrosion. A spectacular coin, graded right, and worthy of inclusion in a top-notch collection. (PCGS# 000883)

263The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$400.00
1787 Fugio copper, STATES UNITED 4 CINQ (K-13X) ANACS VF-30.
Inevitable planchet voids to the far left and a slightly tapered planchet on the right deny viewing of all cinquefoils, but of course the Newman K-13X attribution confirms the Redbook "four...

1787 Fugio copper, STATES UNITED 4 CINQ (Newman 11-X). PCGS MS-64.
Minor traces of brick-red color still manage to edge some of the devices on both sides, though the predominant color is undeniably deep mahogany-brown with underlying luster. The usual evidence of a...

Scarcer as a Newman 7-T variety, this Fugio copper also benefits from rock 'em sock 'em eye appeal, due mostly to the lovely contrast between chocolate fields and pecan-brown devices. An amazingly...

1787 STATES UNITED 4 CINQ FUGIO (Newcomb 13-x). PCGS AU-58.
Ignoring the grade on the slab, it would be easy to mistake this delectable chocolate Fugio for a brown UNC coin. The consistent, even cocoa patina shows no disturbance anywhere, so aside from a...

1787 Fugio Cent (Newman 8-x, R.3) STATES UNITED 4 CINQ. ICG MS-62 BN.
If anything, the ICG MS-62 BN grade almost seems conservative by commercial grade standards, as this is simply a knockout choice Fugio. Newman 8-X can be quickly attributed by the large, grotesque...

1787 Fugio cent STATES UNITED, 4 cinquefoil. F details/bent.
Face-on eye-appeal is excellent for a Fugio in the strong "fine" grade range, with a perfect fusion of honey-brown coloration and ash-grey highlights. It is THE classic color scheme for the type. ...

Not stated on the slab label is the pedigree claimed by the consignor: Bank of New York Hoard. That is entirely possible since 264 examples were found in that hoard in 1948, mostly in high grade. ...
