Lot Title:
1861-S PCGS Genuine (AU details/surface damage).
Description:
1861-S is a much tougher semi-key in the Seated Liberty quarter series, with value that spirals into the stratosphere above the XF grade level. The present example offers virtues just within the AU range, including a wealth of definition within the eagle's feathers, but there is no luster to speak of. That in turn stems from surfaces that exhibit defective texture, with microporosity evident in the obverse left field, and widely distributed tooling of the reverse, which may have been ineptly smoothed. Very likely a ground find, this is a coin that has been reconditioned so as to seem more appealing to most collectors, and the details are without doubt the most redeeming characteristic.
