Lot Title: 1798 2nd Hair Style ICG VF-20, 1847 ICG MS-62 BN, and an 1857 Small Date ICG MS-64 BN.
Description: Unattributed large cents from two eras are all certified in ICG holders and graded within reasonable parameters. Surface quality for 1798 (VF-20) is rather decent, though one shade darker than ideal, and with signs of old corrosion minimized mostly to a small patch on the obverse at 10:00. A single blunt oblong mark at the center of the portrait requires mention. 1847 (MS-62 BN) is virtually ideal at the grade, the only detraction being a rim bump at 9:00. Finally 1857 (MS-64 BN) has lustrous olive-gold patina and relatively sharp obverse details, with minimal marks on either side. Three coin lot.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Low Estimate: $900.00
High Estimate: $1,000.00

1798 2nd Hair Style VF.
Ronald Zink Early Type Collection. The commercial VF-35 grade seems appropriate given the very strong level of definition seen in Liberty's tresses, and unexpected of a still-uncertified large-cent,...

1798 2nd Hair Style (S-186, Die State A) PCGS VF-30.
7070 Collection. The fine die crack at the reverse lower right readily attributes both the Sheldon and die-state as suggested. This is simply a terrific type coin, showing almost perfectly even...
211The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$475.00
1798 2nd Hair Style (S-166) ICG XF-40 details/corroded.
S-166 is one of the most common Sheldon attributions for 1798, easily and quickly identified by the arcing die crack on the reverse lower left, a characteristic that also makes it popular with...
275The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$8,250.00
1798 2nd Hair Style (S-168). AU.
The obverse die used on S-168 and S-169 was paired up with three different reverses for S-148, S-153, and S-168. Proximity of LIBERTY to the rim, and the peripheral die crack around the reverse gets...
122The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$2,800.00
1798 2nd Hair Style (S-172A, R.2). NGC AU-50 BN.
The early "A" die state for this 1798 S-172 ensures a bold, even and sharp strike that is handsomely centered on the flan. The obverse is leather-brown overall, yet protected areas display modest...
123The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$800.00
1798 2nd Hair Style (S-166, R.1). PCGS Genuine.
Whimsically called the "whisker variety" due to a minuscule tine that descends from Liberty's chin. Housed in a PCGS Genuine-95 holder, this S-166 exhibits prominent XF details and significant...
124The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$825.00
1798 2nd Hair Style (S-186, R.2). PCGS VF-20.
There is an intriguing connection between 1798 S-186 and the rare 1799/8 S-188 in that the same reverse die was used to strike both die marriages. Yet by following the progression of an arcing die...
125The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$260.00
1798 2nd Hair Style (S-171 B, R.5). VF.
S-171 (die state "B") is a rare (R.5-) Sheldon variety of the "second hair style" type, with the die state easily identified by the grotesque obverse rim cud at 10:00. Besides that anomaly, this...

1798 2nd Hair Style (S-170, R-3). VF.
S-170 is a somewhat better Sheldon variety, given an R.3+ rarity rating. Here is a well detailed example that features every strand of hair nicely delineated and a fully clothed bosom that shows very...

1798 Small 8's/ 2nd Hair Style and Lettering (S-169, R-3) Fine...
While the pecan-tan color is pleasing, some ashy grey staining of Liberty's portrait is noted, and a sizeable carbon spot has built up near the end of the hair ribbon. An unknown process, presumably...

1798 2nd Hair Style, Arc Crack (S-187, R-1).. VF+ details, corroded.
Very-fine details are immediately recognizable by the distinct brow line at Liberty's forehead, and the overall sharpness of detail cannot be missed. Fine micro-porosity detracts from the overall...
499The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$320.00
1798 2nd Hair Style, Arc Crack (S-187, R-1). VF details.
Surprisingly little eye appeal has been lost despite the even overall microporosity. Details are sharp, and the hairline at Liberty's forehead is distinct, suggesting strong VF details. An edge...
191The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$6,750.00
1798 "S-184" 2nd Hair Style. PCGS AU-55.
Ex. Joshua & Ally Walsh, Heritage 2006: 563. S-184 is instantly recognizable by "the faint spray of flowers" noted at the top left corner of the "7", as described by Sheldon, and the die crack at A3...

Four Draped Bust Large Cents.
A quartet of early coppers, specifically 1798 VG+, 1800 VF Corroded, 1806 Fine Corroded, and 1807 VF Corroded. The 1798 is particularly nice, while the three other coins have some level of corrosion....
