Lot Title:
1791 Washington Large Eagle, date on obverse, PCGS MS-63BN (green label).
Description:
While Washington's portrait on the obverse is finely rendered and aesthetically pleasing, it is known that the great President himself rejected the notion of his likeness being placed on any coin, as that smacked too close to the monarchical coinage of the mother country. Further, the coins had been privately produced, and Washington desired the creation of a national mint from which to centralize all coinage production. Offered here is a handsome example of the "large eagle reverse" 1791 cent, and it offers glimmering pecan-gold luster within the peripheral areas, as well as a very slight hint of prooflike production. The design motifs are especially well rendered on the highly detailed reverse, with the obverse showing a little incomplete detail in the President's hair. (PCGS# 000702)
