Lot Title:

1924-S PCGS MS-64.
|
Description:
|
Decades ago, 1924-S was considered THE key to the Saint-Gaudens series, but of course, the intervening years have shown it to be only a scarce, and not "rare" coin. On the other hand, the issue provides a classic example of true "condition rarity". It is common in circulated grades, begins to show strong premiums in MS-60 to 62, commands four figures at MS-63, and is downright expensive in this, the MS-64 grade. PCGS shows 94 so-graded pieces, but an almost absurdly rare population of just 3(!) at higher grade levels. In the popular MS-65 grade, value jumps by a factor of about eight times. Registry collectors know a bargain when they see one! Gratifying brassy-gold luster dominates this example, relieved in areas by accents of deeper royal-gold patina, and even slender hints of lime-green near the rims. What seems at first to be a scratch through ERT is in fact a strikethrough, though it must be noted that there is a rather meaningful scrape through the rightmost third of the eagle's plumage. All the other trivial marks are fully expected of the grade. (PCGS# 009179)

Similar to the story of the 1903-O Morgan dollar, prior to discovery of small hoards of the 1924-S (in European holdings, not in U.S. Treasury vaults), it was considered an extremely rare... |
