Lot Title:
1924-S PCGS MS-63.
Description:
Similar to the story of the 1903-O Morgan dollar, prior to discovery of small hoards of the 1924-S (in European holdings, not in U.S. Treasury vaults), it was considered an extremely rare double-eagle. Even today, after long dispersion of those hoards, it is a difficult and expensive piece in any better grade. Although this example is not especially well struck, it has been better preserved than many competing specimens, with the most substantial marks resting on the left (observed) side of Liberty's bosom and along her outstretched arm. As is expected of this grade level, multiple tiny handling marks align themselves down her torso, but none are individually detracting.
The reverse lacks any sizeable blemishes. Pleasing forest-green iridescence sweeps up the left side of the obverse, and gathers at the extreme edge throughout most of the obverse rim, affirming a high degree of original preservation. It is curious to note that in every U.S. series that includes a 1924-S representative, that date is always one of the more difficult in high grade, and the rule applies to the Saint-Gaudens series of double-eagles as well. A genuinely rare coin that deserves placement in a finer gold collection.

Decades ago, 1924-S was considered THE key to the Saint-Gaudens series, but of course, the intervening years have shown it to be only a scarce, and not "rare" coin. On the other hand, the issue... |
