Lot Title:
1875 PCGS PF-62.
Description:
Of the 700 proof dollars coined in 1875, the type-2 reverse is considered scarcer, with no berry beneath the eagle's right (observed) talon. Those that have the berry tend to have a weak strike in the area, and one could guess that the feature was eliminated to permit better metal flow and sharper strikes. And certainly, there is no lack of sharpness here, since every single detail, including segmentation within the stars, is present. However, the strike is not quite full, since elevation of the stars on the obverse right are not fully rounded. Surfaces are navy-grey overall, with underlying steely cobalt-blue iridescence that becomes a bit more lively at some viewing angles. Unfortunately, overall reflectivity is impeded by the murky patina, and the overall subdued presentation undoubtedly led to the lower PF-62 grade. There are no obvious hairlines or contact marks that would otherwise explain the less-than-choice assessment by PCGS. (PCGS# 007055)

The reverse is the better side, as it displays vibrant luster and excellent sharpness, although a planchet defect (as struck) is noted at "900". The obverse is curiously dull, as if lightly wiped,... |
