Lot Title:

1923-S NGC MS-64+ RB.
|
Description:
|
A combination of low mintage runs and subpar production standards at the branch mints during the 1920s had a simple effect on the population of coins available to collectors: nice, sharp examples in high grade are rare. Mintage for 1923-S was only 8.7 million, and those were usually struck off heavily used dies, resulting in the mushy details nearly always seen on one side or the other. Furthermore, the advent of certification and population reports proves that red examples are downright rare, and even those that are mostly red but qualified only for the "red-brown" level are difficult to locate. NGC assigned an MS-64+ RB grade to the present example, helping to emphasize the mint orange color that is probably just one shade off from being fully "red". Really, only the reverse displays a touch of brown, though the brilliance is muted on both sides, as expected of an issue that never shows blazing luster. Orange peel effect in the fields speaks volumes about dies used well beyond their intended life, and there are a few minor carbon flecks to be seen here and there. Overall sharpness is actually pretty nice overall, all things considered, with the reverse just a touch better defined than the obverse. (PCGS# 002547)

1923-S PCGS MS-64 Brown.

The surfaces reflect an awesome mixture or fiery violet and appealing cinnamon on this somewhat challenging date to find in higher grades. The date is strong, and the mintmark is distinct. |
