Lot Title:
1848-C XF details/peeling/lamination.
Description:
A lamination error on an earlier gold coin is not necessarily all that rare, but is certainly all the more interesting in the form of a "peeling lamination", since the erupted metal is retained, still attached to the coin's surface. The Charlotte mint certainly had its share of difficulties in minting gold, but the effects of improper alloy mix are usually not as dramatic as seen here! The obverse right side displays several very jagged edges that suggest multiple peels, and for that matter, the right edge is beautifully crackled, almost as if part of the edge is ready to fall right off the coin. Remarkably, the coin itself is a gorgeous "gem extremely-fine", much more original in character than the frequent "helped" example, and pretty well struck. All in all, it is a fascinating choice for inclusion in the holdings of a Charlotte gold specialist. (PCGS# 007750)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
