Lot Title:

1911 NGC PF-68 Cameo.
Description:
At one time, this would have been tied with the Bruce Scher specimen (along with a handful of others) as the finest known 1911 cameo proof half, but two coins in higher grade have been recently certified by NGC. It is risky to assess the exact population of the "PF-68 CAMEO" assessment due to resubmissions, and the likelihood is that one or two have graduated up from this level, but suffice it to say that a coin of this caliber is just plain rare. Devastating sharpness crisply defines the devices, as expected of high-grade proof coinage of the era, and the obverse actually appears to be very close to the DCAM level of contrast. Not quite as much thick frost appears on the eagle's portrait, although the reverse side is plainly a near black-and-white cameo. A couple of trivial hairlines sweep down and left from the upper right stars, but the only notable distractions are a single carbon dot on Liberty's cheek, and a single tiny spot of tone in front of Liberty's chin. One look at this impressive proof instantly begs the question: NGC, where oh where is my CAMEO designation?? Liberty's portrait stands out in plain contrast from mirrored fields that exhibit... |
