Lot Title:
1878 PCGS PF-63 (rattler).
Description:
PR-63 only tells the tale of technical quality, since the eye-appeal is much, much better than that implies for this proof quarter. A short curving scratch suspended in the obverse right field appears to be the sole defect responsible for the conservative grade. But the surface is invested with deep velvet-blue and watery magenta-orange toning that explodes with vivid brilliance under perfect lighting conditions. And both sides benefit from the fabulous toning scheme, which makes this an easy type coin to recommend to potential bidders. (PCGS# 005579)

Opulent, deep emerald-green patina dominates the eye-appeal, draping heavily over the obverse above Liberty's portrait, and cedes gently to lush lavender-grey toward the central areas. A similar... |
