Lot Title:
1919-S NGC MS-65.
Description:
The arresting quality of this precious gem derives from pewter-grey surfaces that are not too flashy, not too bright, but fully lustrous and just right. A discussion of technical merits must begin with the sharpness, which is highly attractive for a San Francisco half of the era. Liberty's forefinger and thumb are given close to full definition, with the balance of the obverse very sharp throughout. Only the very center of the eagle's motif displays a hint of softness. The cottony luster spreads outward from the center in multiple bands, virtually unimpeded by a gentle layer of patina. This includes some noticeable beige color along the lower third of the obverse, and upper-right quarter of the reverse. 1919-S is recognized as one of the top two or three keys to the series at the GEM level, with NGC showing a meager supply of 19 in this grade, and 8 graded higher.
