Lot Title:
Two 1856-S PCGS XF-45 (green label).
Description:
An interesting dichotomy in appearance is all the more magnified because PCGS has handed out identical grades in identical green-label holders for this pair of 1856-S double eagles, yet the could hardly be more different. Both are graded XF-45, and the similarities end there. The more original coin displays pleasing toast-gold patina thoroughly distributed across each side and some cartwheel luster beneath the vintage surfaces. The other coin is lightly cleaned, heavily abraded and displays no luster at all! It always bears reinforcement that grading is an art, not a science, and subjectivity is both expected and desired as part of the grading process. These values are no better expressed than by this two coin lot.

PCGS indicates that this AU-50 coin was cleaned, though that seems an arguable assessment by comparison to worse coins in their own holders. The cleaning is generally inoffensive, and 75% of the... |

A worthy example of this Type I Coronet Double Eagle from the San Francisco Branch Mint. The lustrous surfaces emanate a rich, gold hue. Some light hairlines are evident, as are some insignificant... |
