Lot Title:
1856-S ANACS (Holder Cracked) AU-55.
Description:
In other series, especially silver, 1856-S is recognizable as a somewhat better date, while in the double eagle series... not so much, especially since a hoard turned up on the S.S. Central America. Indeed, it is now a common date overall. This example boasts plenty of lemon-gold luster and practically complete detail despite ten points of wear, but the obverse appearance is marred by a lengthy scratch that begins at the forehead follows the portrait down below the chin. Cataloger's note: the small ANACS holder is heavily cracked and its integrity compromised.

Two 1856-S PCGS XF-45 (green label).

An interesting dichotomy in appearance is all the more magnified because PCGS has handed out identical grades in identical green-label holders for this pair of 1856-S double eagles, yet the could... |

1856-S PCGS Genuine.
PCGS indicates that this AU-50 coin was cleaned, though that seems an arguable assessment by comparison to worse coins in their own holders. The cleaning is generally inoffensive, and 75% of the... |

A worthy example of this Type I Coronet Double Eagle from the San Francisco Branch Mint. The lustrous surfaces emanate a rich, gold hue. Some light hairlines are evident, as are some insignificant... |
