1914-S PCGS MS-63 (green label), 1924 PCGS MS-64 (green label), and 1927-D PCGS MS-63 (green label).
|
Description:
|
Diverse quality is evident over two decades of buffalo nickels represented by this trio, all certified in NGC green-label holders. 1914-S is a lead-grey example that displays wonderful texture in the fields - the result of well worn dies. It's a premium quality piece at MS-63 that compensates for minimal luster with exemplary, vintage surface quality. 1924 exudes steely sky-blue tone intertwined with sunset-gold colors, all on sharp details, and is perfectly graded at MS-64. Finally, 1927-D is rather flat, with considerable die erosion near the rims and a lot of pre-existing planchet ticks. Strictly speaking, this last might be a lot better looking in an MS-62 holder, but most collectors realize the branch mints were having trouble striking up fully detailed nickels in the mid to late 1920s. Three coin lot.

Solid quality promotes the value of this two coin lot. The 1914-S nickel (PCGS MS-63) has a subtle hint of cyan toning on the obverse while pewter-grey throws highlights across the reverse, and both... |

Egg yolk iridescence completely engulfs the 1914-S, which displays MS-60 details and a distinctive die crack along the Indian's uppermost feather. Bacon with those eggs? The 1916-S has upper... |

Details are unexpectedly sharp for a San Francisco issue, though during the early teens, the mint was not plagued by the strike issues seen for the next decade. Deeply toned in russet-bronze and... |
