Lot Title:

1861 CLARK-GRUBER. NGC AU Details/scratches.
Description:
Brothers Austin and Milton Clark and Emanuel Gruber built a two-story brick building to house their gold brokerage operation in Denver City, anticipating profit on bullion to be shipped east for coining. High cost of freight and insurance led to realization that the best way to maximize returns would be to mint their own coins locally, thus leading to creation of a private mint, and striking of their first coins in June 1860. Clark-Gruber gold has a distinctive chartreuse hue that is evident here. While collectors not accustomed to the limitations of the dies may be surprised at the soft detail, NGC has correctly declared "AU details", with scratches noted in the obverse left field. The scratches are deep enough that they could represent a contemporary test to confirm a genuine gold coin, as opposed to a plated imitation.
