Lot Title:
1851 887 HUMBERT. PCGS Genuine.
Description:
While many Humbert fifty-dollar slugs are known in middle and upper grades, it is quite unusual to see one this well circulated, evidently at the VG level (PCGS did not assign a grade). Damage as indicated by Genuine-98 takes the form of three circular machined scratches, two of them on the obverse, but truth be told, at this grade level they don't mean much. With so much wear, it might be reasonable to assume that this was a pocket piece, though one could wonder who in the heck was walking around town fondling this much gold weight in his pants pocket. Or it could just be that these fifty-dollar monsters continued to circulate long after they were to be redeemed for melting down into recoinage, though it's difficult to imagine how many large hand-to-hand transactions would required to produce this much wear. An intriguing piece without doubt, and a remarkable opportunity to enter into this rarified market at a palatable financial level.
