Lot Title:

1787 Fugio Copper/Pointed Rays/United States/"Cross After Date Obverse, No Cinquefoils" (Newman 1-B, R.4) PCGS VG-10.
Description:
Grading companies seemingly cannot resist assigning midpoint grades to early copper, even though inconsistent manufacturing processes and primitive stock guarantee that it is impossible to assess grades of such surgical precision consistently. Nonetheless, the PCGS VG-10 grade seems intended to reflect a pleasing brown coin with well worn devices, yet outstanding eye-appeal for such a low grade. Perhaps a couple of numerals on the sundial are almost visible, but the sun has lost almost all her details to heavy wear, and the date is a little faint. The obverse die for Newman 1-B features a cross after the date, and represents a popular Redbook variety.
